Striking teachers were demanding pay raises. As tensions mounted, Kaczyński promised farmers and cattle breeders EU subsidies of 500 złoty for each cow and 100 złoty for each pig. Teachers fighting for pay raises viewed these promises as demeaning. "There's money for pigs and cows, but no money for us?" they asked, outraged.
